General note

Brookhurst was opened in Cobourg in the early 1870s, under the administration of Mary Electa Adams. The school was created for citizens of the United Counties of Northumberland and Durham who wished for their daughters to have access to higher education. Students at Brookhurst who passed exams were entitled to attend lectures at nearby Victoria College. The idea was that the private school would eventually merge with Victoria College, allowing women to gain a full university-level education. Some members of the community were not happy with this, and due to financial hardships the school was closed down in 1880.
