History
Nigel Brodeur (1932- ) served with the Royal Canadian Navy (RCN) during 1952-1987, attaining the rank of Vice-Admiral. Born in Victoria, BC, he joined the RCN in 1952 as a midshipman. From 1956 to 1960 he served in a variety of positions in HMCS Sussexvale and HMCS Beacon Hill. He served as weapons officer in HMCS Kootenay, then in the Weapons Division, Fleet School, Halifax, instructing in sonar and serving as weapons long course officer. He was appointed Senior Staff Officer, Men, at Maritime Command Headquarters, Halifax in 1966. In December of that year he assumed command of the HMCS Terra Nova. In 1969 he became section head of the project definition section in the Directorate of Maritime Systems Engineering at CFHQ, Ottawa.
In 1971 Brodeur joined the project team for the DDH-280 program. He was appointed commandant of the Canadian Forces Maritime Warfare School, Halifax, in 1972 and two years later assumed command of the Halifax-based Fifth Canadian Destroyer Squadron. He attended the National Defence College, Kingston, in 1976 and the next year returned to Ottawa as Director Maritime Requirements, Sea at NDHQ. In 1978 he was appointed Director General Maritime Doctrine and Operations at NDHQ. He was promoted to the rank of rear-admiral in 1980 and named Chief of Maritime Doctrine and Operations at NDHQ. In 1982, he became Chief of Staff, Commander-in-Chief Western Atlantic and Deputy Chief of Staff, Operations, Reinforcements and Resupply Operations at the Supreme Allied Commander Atlantic Headquarters in Norfolk, Virginia. In 1985, Brodeur was promoted to Vice-Admiral and named Deputy Chief of the Defence Staff. He retired in 1987.
