    Administrative history

The British Columbia District of the PAOC was formed in 1927 and the first district conference gathering was held in Vancouver in 1928. Prior to 1927, B.C. was part of the Western Canadian District Council of the Assemblies of God in the United States. In 1922 the assemblies of western Canada joined the Pentecostal Assemblies of Canada and amicably separated from the Assemblies of God. The PAOC, at that time consisting mostly of assemblies in Eastern Canada, was the Eastern Canadian District Council of the Assemblies of God. They too parted with the Assemblies of God and the PAOC became a truly national denomination. The western Canadian provinces retained their Western District status within the PAOC until growth demanded that each province be recognized as their own district. Throughout the 1930s, evangelistic work and church planting continued in the interior of British Columbia. In 1962 the Yukon Territory became part of the British Columbia District. In 1981 the District Conference voted to accept a new constitution and by-laws which included the Yukon in the name of the District. The current organizational structure of the PAOC divides Canada into eight districts: British Columbia and Yukon, Alberta and Northwest Territories, Saskatchewan, Manitoba and Northwestern Ontario, Western Ontario, Eastern Ontario, Quebec, and the Maritimes. A District Conference is composed of all the credential holders in the district and lay delegates from local congregations. Under the authority of the General Conference, the District Conferences through the District offices serve the autonomous assemblies (local churches) and credential holders in their region. Their responsibilities include examining and ordaining ministers. Each district elects its own officers and committees, establishes departments and institutions as needed, and holds property in trust as required. There is an elected District Superintendent and in most cases, other officers such as an Assistant Superintendent and a District Secretary/Treasurer. The districts are divided into Sections or Zones which elect a credential holder to serve as a Presbyter and member of the District Executive. Either appointed district staff or pastors serving local assemblies are selected to facilitate a variety of ministries in the district such as youth ministries, men's ministries, evangelism, church ministries, and so forth. The District Executive gives oversight to the general business and work of the district. It is exercises discipline over its credential holders when written allegations have been received.

    Scope and content

The fonds consists of the administrative records of the British Columbia and Yukon District. They reflect the decisions made by the District, the rules which govern the District, and the means of communicating District news and events to the membership. There are six series. Series 1 - District Conference minutes and reports. Series 2 - District constitutions and by-laws. Series 3 - District circular letters. These records contain the instruments through which the District communicated with its membership about District events and activities. This series also contains copies of the District newsletter called "Fellowship News". Series 4 - District program records. These records consist of clippings and pamphlets about District events, camps, native ministries, women's ministries, and a church history prepared in 1977 for the 50th anniversary of the District. Series 5 - Curriculum. This series contains a manual entitled "Church Planting: A District Perspective" which was created by the British Columbia and Yukon District. Series 6 - Ministry Information Packets. These records are also known as Pastor's Paks and are distributed regularly to local churches by the district. They provide information about the programs and initiatives of the district.
