The Briar Hill Women’s Institute in Grey County, Ontario, was founded by Mrs. Lorne Snider of Bothwell Corners, and was active from 1949 to 1973, on the western shore of Georgian Bay, between Annan and Balaclava, near Owen Sound, Ontario. The Women’s Institute Branches of Annan, Bothwell Corners and Balaclava were located close by. This branch of the Federated Women’s Institutes of Ontario held meetings in the Johnstone Church basement. In the mid-1930s, the wife of Lord Tweedsmuir, Governor General of Canada from 1935 – 1940, suggested that all Women’s Institutes create local history books, which became known as the Tweedsmuir histories. The Briar Hill Women’s Institute participated in documenting the local history of its area through that project.

This fonds consists of a scrapbook documenting the activities and interests of the Institute from 1954-1965, and the local Tweedsmuir history.
