Brereton Greenhous (1929-) was a Senior historian with the Directorate of History and an author. Born in England, he served in the British Army, with the Malayan police, and in the Canadian army between 1947 and 1965. He completed a B.A. degree at Carleton University, an M.A. at Queen's University, and two years of pre-doctoral study in Dublin before teaching history at Lakehead University. He joined the Department of National Defence in 1971. An authority on tactical airpower (especially on the aircraft/armour interface), his articles on military history have been published in six countries. He is also the author of "Semper Paratus: The History of the Royal Hamilton Light Infantry (Wentworth Regiment), 1862-1977", and co-author with W.A.B. Douglas of "Out of Shadows: Canada in the Second World War."

Stephen John Harris (1948- ) is Chief Historian at the Directorate of History and Heritage. Raised in Toronto and Burlington, he attended McMaster University, Hamilton, where he received a B.A. (English and History) in 1969, and a M.A. (History) in 1970. In September 1970 he accepted a position with the Canadian Forces College Extension School, located at Armour Heights, as an instructor in military history, a position he held until 1974. That year he began doctoral studies at Duke University, Durham, North Carolina, and finished his Ph.D. in 1979. His thesis, "Canadian Brass: The Making of a Professional Army, 1860-1939", was published by the University of Toronto Press in 1988. Dr. Harris joined the Directorate of History in 1979, and from 1980 until 1994 was part of a team writing the Official History of the Royal Canadian Air Force (RCAF). He contributed two chapters to Volume II, and was responsible for the ten chapters dealing with the strategic bombing offensive in Volume III. With Brereton Greenshous, he wrote a history of the battle of Vimy Ridge commemorating its 75th anniversary. He has also contributed articles on army and air force history to a number of books and journals, and has recently written a number of internal DND studies on professionalism, unification, militia reorganization, and command control.

William C. Johnston was educated at the University of Waterloo where he received a Bachelor of Arts degree in history in 1979 and a Masters of Arts degree in 1982. He became an historian with the Directorate of History and Heritage, Dept. of National Defence in 1982. Mr. Johnson was responsible for the Policy and Maritime Air sections of the third volume of official history of the Royal Canadian Air Force and contributed to the second volume of the official history of the Royal Canadian Navy. He is the author of A War of Patrols. The Canadian Army in Korea, 1950-1953 and is currently principle author of the first volume of the official history of the Royal Canadian Navy.

Bill Rawling (1959- ) is a graduate of the University of Ottawa and the University of Toronto. He is the author of Surviving Trench Warfare (1992); Death Their Enemy Canadian Medical Practitioners and War (2001) and Technicians of Battle(2001). He is currently an historian with the Directorate of History and Heritage, Dept. of National Defence. Dr. Rawling also served for eight years as a militia field engineer.

Collection consists of material documenting the preliminary work on "The Crucible of War, 1939-1945" (The Official History of the Royal Canadian Air Force, Volume III). Includes preliminary narratives, draft chapters, professional correspondence and memoranda, reviews and commentaries, photographs as well as a compilation of newspaper clippings related to the book. Also contains relevant background material consisting mostly of published articles, historical reports, bibliographies and photographs exempt from the final copy. There are eight series:
