Biographical history

Dr. Bill McAndrew (1934- ) is a former soldier, university professor and historian at the Directorate of History. He has written several books including "Battle Exhaustion: Soldiers and Psychiatrists in the Canadian Army 1939-1945" (with Terry Copp), "Liberation: The Canadians in Europe" (with Bill Rawling and Michael Whitby) and "Canadians and the Italian Campaign 1943-1945". McAndrew has also published extensively in professional journals and regularly conducts battlefield studies in Europe.

Donald Graves (1949-) est reconnu internationalement comme un expert sur la guerre de 1812 et il a publié quatre livres à ce sujet. Il était historien au Service historique du ministère de la Défense nationale. Il a écrit, co-écrit ou édité plus d’une douzaine de livres. De plus, il était historien consultant pour l'émission sur la guerre de 1812 de la série télévisée CBC Millenium History, diffusée en 2000. En 1999, M. Graves était le directeur de Ensign Heritage, une compagnie spécialisée dans la consultation et les voyages liés au patrimoine.

Michael Whitby (1954-) est le chef de l’équipe de l'histoire navale à la Direction – Histoire et patrimoine et responsable de la publication des trois volumes de l’Histoire officielle de la Marine royale canadienne (MRC), 1867-1968. Il est le co-auteur du volume 2, partie 1 de cette série, la partie sur la MRC pendant la Deuxième Guerre mondiale. De plus, il a co-écrit deux livres sur l’expérience canadienne lors de la Deuxième Guerre mondiale. Il a co-édité un historique technique de l’aéronavale canadienne et publié plusieurs articles sur l’histoire navale dans des revues internationales. M. Whitby a aussi servi en tant que rédacteur sénior des allocutions et analyste des politiques au QGDN.

Scope and content

Fonds consists of material related to the published work "Normandy 1944. The Canadian Summer." Includes the English manuscript, the first and second French translations, the illustrations with some French captions, a mockup of the final book, in English, and several maps. Also includes a map (2012/12) of the first day of the invasion of Normandy with an overlay containing information regarding the Allied advance at Sword, Gold, and Juno Beaches as well as the German defence.
