Biographical history
Betty Eleanor Odlum was born on September 29th, 1924 to parents Milford J. Odlum and Lavina Bellas. She lived her entire life in Brampton, with the majority of that time spent at 40 Lorne Avenue, which is just on the edge of the former Dale Estate Nursery properties. After attending school in Brampton she took courses at a business college, graduating in 1943. That same year she joined Bell Canada as an employee, working out of their Brampton offices until the day she retired. She never married and never had any children. An excellent amateur photographer, she spent a considerable amount of time documenting the neighbourhood, particularly the changing structures of Brampton in the downtown core, the demolition of the Dale greenhouses and the building of subsequent new homes. She passed away on August 13th, 2015.
Custodial history
Scope and content
Fonds consists of records created and/or collected by Brampton resident Betty Odlum. The majority of the fonds consists of photographic slides and prints created and/or collected by Betty.
The photographs document a wide range of Brampton area properties, buildings, events, and people, with a particular focus on downtown Brampton, the Dale Estate, and Lorne Avenue.
The fonds also contains a small amount of non-photographic material collected or created by Betty, including scrapbooks, programs, and an Odlum family marriage certificate. An Odlum family history album found in the fonds will likely be of much use to those interested in the history of the Odlum family, an early settler family in the Toronto Gore area.
