History
Bedford United Church, located at 3340 Sandwich Street in Windsor, was established ca. 1992, when Calvary and Sandwich Churches amalgamated. It is still an active congregation of the United Church of Canada.
Calvary United Church was established in 1925; formerly Methodist. It was started a Methodist mission in the west end of Windsor by the Windsor Avenue Methodist Church in 1897. The mission was named Wellington Street Mission. A church building was constructed at 27 Wellington Avenue in 1899; it was moved in 1904 to the corner of London Street and Elm Avenue; renamed as London Street Methodist Church. It joined the United Church in 1925 and changed its name to West End United Church. In 1933, its name was changed again to Calvary United Church. It closed in 1992
Sandwich United Church, located at 3340 Sandwich Street, was established in 1925; formerly Methodist. The Sandwich Methodist Church was first founded in 1838; the church building was later sold to the township in 1874 and the congregation went to Windsor Methodist Church. Services resumed in Sandwich in 1904 and a church was built in 1907 as Sandwich Methodist Church. The church joined the United Church in 1925, It amalgamated with Calvary United Church in 1992 to form Bedford United Church in the former Sandwich United Church building.
