Custodial history

This collection was held by the Ayr Branch of the Region of Waterloo Library until it was transferred to the Region of Waterloo archives in 2017.

Scope and content

This fonds consists of operational and local history documents that were saved by the staff of the Ayr Branch of the Region of Waterloo Library over an extended period of time. Much of this fonds was collected when the Ayr Branch was still an independent library.

The fonds contains paperwork and records generated by the operation of the Ayr Library, which were apparently stored by staff after use in the vault of the old library for many years. This includes financial records, cheques, receipts, bank statements, reports, insurance policies, ledgers, visitor and book records, forms relating to the Department of Education and correspondence from the Ontario Library Association, various Ayr businesses and other Ontario libraries.

There is also a wide ranging selection of documents relating to the history of the Library, of Ayr and of local institutions and organizations. It includes photographs, scrapbooks, minute books, newspapers, pamphlets, funeral notices, collected loose documents and handwritten histories. These primary and secondary sources were collected by the Library as their local history collection for the use of researchers. The fonds is arranged into twenty series.
