    Name of creator

    Administrative history

First formed in 1914 as the Library Debating Club, the name was changed in 1915 to the Ottawa Literary and Philosophical Society and changed again to its present title in 1916. The club's program included music, debates and lectures on social, literary and art topics. Some notable speakers at its lectures included Charlotte Whitton, Grattan O'Leary, Agnes MacPhail, Chief Justice Latchford and Frederick Philip Grove. Declining membership and poor attendance, attributed to competition from the radio and movies, led to the disbanding of the club in 1937.
