      History

Appleby College is a non-profit, independent school for students in Grades 7 to 12. Founded in 1911, by Sir Edmund Walker, a Canadian businessman, philanthropist, and arts patron, and his son-in-law, John Guest, Appleby's first Headmaster, the school began as a Kindergarten to Grade 12 boys' school with one building on a 32-acre parcel of land. The school’s name was changed to Appleby College in 1941. The change resulted from a concern that Appleby might be regarded as simply a ‘prep’ (i.e. elementary) school. In the fall of 1991, the school became co-educational.
