Dear Mrs. Uffelmann:-
Your “proxy” letter received yesterday, and was so glad to hear from you.
My husband told me about Will, being gassed, and on receipt of your letter looked up his record. He is at a Convalescent Hospital in France, so was not seriously
[Page 2]
gassed, or he would have been sent to England. When writing, address him to his unit, as in all likelihood he will be returned there, by the time your letter will reach him.
I met Dep. Kumpf, when crossing Piccadilly Circus yesterday. He is in hospital at Epsom, after being gassed. His lungs are affected, and he is very short of breath, so you see his case is much more serious than Will’s. Dep. Looks miserable not much like the boy he used to be.
I trust you are feeling better, we all must try to remember our duty is towards the living ever looking onward to a

brighter future when tears are no more.
We spent a very quiet Christmas. One cannot banish the thought of war over here.
