Biographical history
Ann Maria Walton (1799-1862) was the daughter of Captain Jonathan Walton and Margaret Ann Thatcher. Captain Walton was the founder of Port Hope, Ontario. The main street in Port Hope was named after him. Ann Maria Walton was born in Cobourg. She married Nicholas Fairley Beck. The couple lived in Albany, New York. They had one son, John Walton Romeyn Beck (later rector of St John's Anglican Church). After her husband's untimely death in 1830, Ann returned to Canada and married the Hon. George Strange Boulton. They lived in Peterborough until her death in 1862.
Custodial history
The sketchbook was in the possession of a great grandson of Ann Maria Walton, prior to its acquisition by the City Archives in 1969.
Scope and content
Fonds consists of a sketchbook (with marble paper covers) containing ten detailed pencil sketches of cityscapes, waterscapes and rural scenes - many in the Peterborough area. They were rendered by Ann Maria Walton (1799-1862), daughter of Port Hope's founder, Captain John Walton. Also included are hand-written notes entitled, "a few lines on perspective", by Ann Maria Walton. Specific sketches include: Little Lake, Jones Falls, Davis Hill, the Otonabee River, a mountain waterfall and other subjects.
