Description area

Historique

The Verschoyle Phillip Memorial Archives were established to create a safe and secure central repository of records created by the churches, clergy, parishioners, and general Synod activities of the Huron Diocese.

Geographical and cultural context

The Anglican Diocese of Huron encompasses a large section of Southwestern Ontario; it spans from Pelee Island to Tobermory (south to north) and from Brantford/Six Nations to Lake Huron (east to west). This area historically includes over 340 churches, of which roughly 130 are still active today.

Mandates/Sources of authority

Canon Law compels the churches in the Diocese of Huron to transfer their historical records to the Archives for safekeeping and to make them accessible to interested researchers.

Cronyn Archives on the Huron University College Campus: https://diohuron.org/resources/huron-archives/pages/visiting-the-archives

Visitors with mobility concerns should enter the building near the security office as there are ramps and automatic doors available. Please note that entering the building from next to the Chapel does not allow for easy access to the Archives to those with mobility concerns as there is no public elevator.
