Biographical history
Alex McIlvena was Superintendant of the Trent Canal. He lived at 33 Cricket Place in Peterborough from about 1949 until his death in the mid 1950's.
Custodial history
These albums were found in the attic at 33 Cricket Place by the donor, who then offered them to the City Archives as a donation. Research using Peterborough City directories indicates that Alex McIlvena, Superintendant of the Trent Canal, lived at 33 Cricket Place in Ashburnham, from the late 1940's until his death in the mid 1950's. His wife continued to live in the house until about 1979-1980.
Scope and content
The collection consists of 18 albums containing over 230 pages of 5 x 7 cyanotype photographs that photo-document the construction of the Peterborough Lift Lock in chronological order. Each album has a title such as: "Concrete: Main Walls and Wings", "Pit Excavation", "Hydro Lock Culvert", "Stone Pitching", "Taylor Air Compressor" and so on. The albums were likely produced for the Trent Canal or the federal Department of Public Works.
