The National War Finance Committee was established by the Minister of Finance to organize, advertise, and conduct all public loans used to finance Canada's war effort during World War II. Graham Towers, the Bank of Canada's first Governor, was Chair of the National War Finance Committee.

Hawley, Estelle Cuffe, 1893?-1995

Estelle Cuffe Hawley (1893?-1995) was an educator, businesswoman and politician, who became the first female alderman on the St. Catharines City Council. She began her career as a teacher in Peterborough in 1913, and later taught in St. Catharines, where she was promoted to principal in 1922. She worked to expand the school curriculum beyond the "3-R's" concept and established a professional association for women teachers. In 1938, she became a city councillor for St. Catharines, where, as alderman, she worked to improve the community's social welfare services. She left politics after she was defeated in her bid for the mayoralty in 1944. After moving to Orillia in 1954, she made important contributions to the National Freedom from Hunger Campaign and the Local Voice of Women.

Niagara District Agricultural Society

The Niagara District Agricultural Society, established in 1793, was the first agricultural society in Ontario. Governor John Graves Simcoe, who patronized the society and contributed ten guineas annually, was the President(?), and D.W. Smith the Vice-President. The Society ordered crops for planting, such as fruit trees, as well as providing various books on agriculture and farming. Regular meetings were held by the Society, as well as annual fairs.

Hurlburt, W.E., fl. 1921-1951

W.E. Hurlburt (fl. 1921-1951) was a physician and ornithologist who resided in Vineland, Ont. for much of his life. In 1936, he was in line for honours from the Avicultural Society of America for being the first to breed certain species of foreign birds. By 1951, Dr. Hurlburt had been successful at rearing between 30 to 40 different species.

Sankey, A. Winifred

The Niagara Symphony was founded in 1948 as the St. Catharines Civic Orchestra. The orchestra was established due to the efforts of conductor Jon Wolanek, who had already set up small community orchestras in New York State. Joe West served as the first president on the Board of Directors, Andy Black as secretary and Frank Gibb as treasurer. In 1963, the name was changed to the St. Catharines Symphony Orchestra. The name changed again in 1978, to the Niagara Symphony Orchestra, by which it is known today.

Women's Literary Club of St. Catharines

The Women's Literary Club of St. Catharines was founded in 1892 by a local author, Emma Harvey (Mrs. J.G.) Currie (1829-1913). Mrs Currie brought together a group of women with a shared interest in literature and history, who wanted to pursue that interest in a formal and structured manner. The club developed, flourished and eventually waned. After more than one hundred successful years, the last members deposited the club's archives at Brock University for the benefit of researchers, scholars and the larger community.

Pierian Society

The Pierian Society was founded in September of 1950 in Toronto, Ont., by a group of six friends who had recently graduated from the University of Toronto. The society was formed for both intellectual and social purposes, and members were expected to present one paper each year. Over the years, the membership changed as the original members moved or withdrew, and new members were introduced. As of 1997, there were five active members in the society.

Mitchelson, Edward E.

Edward E. Mitchelson of Niagara Falls, Ont., was active in local politics, serving at different times as councillor and Reeve of Stamford Township, as well as alderman for the City of Niagara Falls. He worked as an administrator at Brock University from 1962 until retiring in 1974. Prior to that, Mr. Mitchelson was head of the agriculture department of Stamford Collegiate Vocational Institute. In 1976, he served as a member of the Commission on Property Tax Reform in Ontario.

Osborn, William (family)

The Thompson and Osborn families were related, with members of both families residing in the Niagara area. John Henry Thompson (1853-1937) lived in Thorold, Ont. and was owner and editor of the local paper, the Thorold Post, for forty years. William Osborn (1812-1857) was originally from England, but spent most of his life in St. Catharines, Ont. He worked as a painter, but also worked as the editor of the Constitutional, and was the leader of a band named after him.

The Radiant Healing Centre was established in 1932 in St. Catharines, Ont., to study and promote spiritual, mental and physical health. Members of the Radiant Healing Centre were largely absent, being widely scattered in the provinces and states. A quarterly publication issued by the Centre entitled Progression was distributed to its members. This publication ceased in February, 1938.

Willson, Stephen, b. 1804

Stephen Willson (b. 1804), son of Crowell and Hannah Willson, moved from Chippawa to Wainfleet Township with his family in 1806. He married Ann Priestman, and the couple raised 11 children. One of their children became the first person buried in Willson cemetery, located in Lots 22 and 23, Concession 5 in Wainfleet Township. The land for this cemetery was donated by Stephen's brother, Hiram, in 1837.

Sankey, Charles A.

Charles A. Sankey was an internationally recognized authority in the field of chemical engineering in the pulp and paper industry who became Brock University's second chancellor in 1969. Originally from Manitoba, Dr. Sankey eventually settled in St. Catharines, Ont., and worked for the Ontario Paper Co. Ltd. in Thorold, Ont. He was a very active member of the Masonic Lodge, and served as district deputy grand master of the Masonic order of Niagara in 1967-1968.
