Title variations: École des gardes-malades d'Youville; École des gardes-malades; Écoles d'infirmières
In 1933, the Ottawa General Hospital relinquishes its control over the École de Garde-Malades d'Youville in favour of the University and is named École des gardes-malades. It is renamed the École d'infirmières de l'Université d'Ottawa in 1943. It then becomes the first bilingual school of nursing in Canada. It is also the first school to join the Faculties of the University; moreover it is the fifth university school of nursing to be created in Canada. Since its beginning a three-year nursing certificate programme leading to provincial examinations is organized. A bachelor of nursing program is introduced to its new contingent in 1962. In 1972, the École changes its name to School of Nursing. In 1978, it joins the Faculty of Health Sciences.
The fonds contain files which document the functions of the School of Nursing. It includes minutes of: the Bureau de direction and Council of the School of Nursing (1938-1967, 1970-1989, 1990-1998, 2001-2006), the Executive Committee of the School (1967-1973, 1978-1982, 1989-1996, 1998-2000, 2006-2007), minutes of research committees of the School (1976, 1981-1997), minutes of the teaching staff committee (1962-1973, 1976-1996) as well as minutes of various program committees (1964-2000). The fonds also contains annual reports (1937-1971, 2000-2002), by-laws and constitutions (1933-1969), requests to the Senate (1968-1973), courses outlines (1962-2008), exam questionnaires (1954-1956, 1958-1961, 1975-1981, 1993-2008), statistics (1947-1978), correspondence, newspaper clippings as well as newspapers including: Silhouette (1938-1949), Local 33 (1938-1941) and Local 34 (1938-1941). The fonds also include iconographic material.
