Administrative history
After World War One, informal reunions of Nursing Sisters began as small local and regional groups, such as the Overseas Nursing Sisters Association of Canada. Early membership of this organization was confined to those who had served overseas, but was later extended to all nurses, physiotherapists, and dieticians who had served in the wartime forces, hence the dropping of “Overseas” from the title. The Association aimed to promote camaraderie among its members through social events and meetings and special recognition of Armistice Day, and links were formed with veterans associations and pilgrimages sponsored to overseas battle sites. In 2001, due to aging of members, the national organization disbanded, though honorary presidents in Ottawa still handle any arising business. The Toronto unit continues to have social meetings.
