Croydon Women’s Institute

Administrative history

The Croydon Women’s Institute was founded in 1924 with Mrs. Stuart Close as the first President. This branch was a part of the Addington District Women’s Institute. Croydon branch disbanded in 1944. This information was written in the front of the Minute and Cash Book, which was copied from Mrs. Allan Carroll’s story of the “History of Camden Township Women’s Institute” in the Township History Book. This fonds consists of one minute book from shortly before the branch’s disbandment. The remaining Croydon branch materials are in an unknown location. Therefore, little information is known on the Croydon branch. Before the war, the Croydon branch worked hard for the members of the community. There are a few references to the members making bags of candy as a Christmas treat for the school children. Prior to and during World War II, dances were a favoured fundraising activity for the Croydon branch. Euchre parties were also held to raise funds. The Minute Book makes a number of references to their contributions to the war effort. The branch made quilts and had sewing bees for the Red Cross. They made a number of donations to the Ontario Society of Crippled Children, War Charities Fund, Red Cross, and the British War Victims Fund. Some of the past Women’s Institute Presidents of Croydon were: Mrs. Stanley (Ethel) Doupe (1937-1938), Miss. Annie Close (1938-1939), Mrs. Edna Teskey/ Mrs. Fred Galbraith/ Miss. Annie Close/ Mrs. Verlie Marlin (3 months each, 1939-1940), and Mrs. Herbert Bawn (1940-1942).
