Administrative history
No. 442 Squadron began life as no . 14 (Fighter) Squadron in 1942 in Rockliffe, Ontario. After flying on West Coast air defence, it was part of the Royal Canadian Air Force's (RCAF) reinforcement to the United States Army Air Forces in the Atlantic campaign from March to September 1943. Selected as one of six home defence fighter squadrons for overseas duty, the Squadron was moved to England where it was re-numbered as No. 442 Squadron 8 February 1944. No. 442 Squadron became operational on 28 March 1944 and was equipped with Supermarine Spitfire IX airfcraft. As part of No. 83 Group, 2nd Tactical Air Force, it engaged in offensive and defensive fighter operations. After D-Day, it acted in support of ground operations. On 15 June 1944, the squadron began operations from France. On 23 March 1945, the Squadron returned to England to be re-equipped with North American Mustang IV aircraft, which were used as long-range escorts to Bomber Command aircraft. No. 442 Squadron was disbanded 7 August 1945.

Scope and content
Fonds consists of files dealing only with the period when No. 442 Squadron was overseas during the Second World War. It includes a list of flying accidents along with a list of officers and/or aircrafts that went missing or died during the Squadron's overseas operations. Also included in are daily operational reports "Opreps", combat reports, weekly changes in strength of operational aircrafts, monthly flying times and monthly returns of officer and airmen pilots.
